Debate Champions

In these times of isolation it is heartening to read about the achievements of our students in the truly social activity that is debating. I remember back in 2014, when I first joined the school, running a debating ECA. Approximately 12 students came to the first session. Many had no idea what debating actually involved but came along because they liked to argue or simply to hear the sound of their own voice. We began with lots of introductory games aimed at loosening the tongue and activating the mind and it was quite a while before PEEL, points of order and rebuttals appeared.

The World Scholar’s Cup and Model United Nations proved to be the catalysts for further growth in debating at ISL Qatar and then the really hardened experts set their sights on Qatar Debates with great success.

Many of the boys who attended those early ECA sessions are now members of the victorious ISL Qatar Boys Debate Teams:

Team 1 Muhammad Ziyad Anwer G12, Sebastian Santoni G11, Emilio Egger Prieto G11
Team 2: Youssef Barakat G11, Raed Asad G11, Ahmed Abdelhameed G11/ Jason Taylor G11

Award School Wins
League Champion International School of London Qatar 13
League Runner Up DPS Modern Indian School 12
League 3rd Position Sherborne Qatar 11

The top individual student award went to Ziyad Anwer, Grade 12. Even as a G8 student, Ziyad was always eager to share his ideas and develop the unique set of skills that all great debaters have.

Congratulations to everyone involved. A special thank you to Smita Shetty for organising the English debating at ISL Qatar, ably supported by Marilou Sedano and Birgit Narayanan.
