ISL Qatar, we are committed to fostering a dynamic and inclusive learning environment that prepares students to thrive in a rapidly evolving world. We believe that technology serves as a powerful catalyst for inquiry, collaboration, and creativity, as well as the development of the attributes of the IB Learner Profile. Our blended learning approach integrates face-to-face instruction with web and cloud-based learning tools, accessible through digital devices. To ensure that our students have equitable access to these learning opportunities, we set out our recommendations and expectations in our Device Policy, below.

Will the school provide the necessary software?

The school ensures that students have access to all essential software packages required for their academic success. The provided software varies by grade level and includes, among others, Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite. Students' school email addresses enable them to utilise a range of school-provided licenses. For accessing web-based applications, Microsoft Edge is the supported browser.

Which Grade Levels does the policy apply to?

Students in Grades 4 through 12 are active participants in our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program, ensuring all students have access to essential learning tools.

What types of devices may students bring to school?

ISL Qatar recommends that families consider purchasing the Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 3.

To enhance the classroom experience and ensure uniform learning experiences, we recommend that families purchase the Microsoft Laptop Go 3.

Families may chose to purchase the recommended model or one of the two other suggested laptops, Asus ZenBook S 13 OLED i7/16GB and the Microsoft Surface Pro 9. It's important to note that laptops purchased overseas might not include a warranty valid in Qatar.

Smartphone or tablet is not considered an alternative to a laptop as these devices will not allow students to engage fully with many learning experiences or complete online assessments and will be detrimental to their studies. ISL Qatar is a Microsoft School and utilizes Microsoft products; therefore, we do not recommend the use of Apple Mac devices.

Are there suggested accessories?

A protective case for all devices is required and students must carry earphones and mouse to allow for self-paced learning. In the middle and high school, a digital stylus is also recommended and will be beneficial for specialist learning experiences.

How will the devices be used?

The BYOD policy fully supports the ISL Digital Learning Curriculum which is designed to prepare students to be digitally literate learners and critical thinkers, engaging with technology to enhance learning all subjects in the curriculum. This policy also supports the preparation of students to take the online IB DP (International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme) exams. We believe in developing technologically literate students who leave ISL Qatar in a competitive position for both college entry and the workplace.

Where will student work be stored?

All work must be stored in the student’s online workspaces provided by ISL Qatar. This space has unlimited storage. Completed work can be submitted through the student's online accounts as directed by the subject teacher.

How secure are the students’ online accounts?

Our online platforms all conform to the latest encryption standards and use industry standard protocols.

Will students always be in front of a screen?

No, students will not always be in front of a screen. At ISL Qatar, we emphasize that the use of technology should be purposeful and not merely for the sake of its existence. Our approach involves thoughtful planning to integrate technology in a way that fosters genuine learning experiences, both within the classroom and beyond.

What support will students have?

The Tech Hub is comprised of three dedicated technical support specialists and three full time learning technologies integrators working across the school with both students and staff.

Do students need to bring their devices to every class?

Yes. In the middle and high school, along with pens, paper, textbooks and calculators, the device is another tool which both students and teachers can call upon at any time, during any lesson. Grade 4 and 5 students will have an opportunity to learn best practice with their devices in a structured environment before their move into the middle school.

Can students and / or parents configure or personalise the device in any way?

Yes. Provided such configuration does not hinder the performance of the device or affects the functioning of the device for teaching and learning. However, teachers will advise students on ways to keep devices running smoothly, and this may involve keeping personalisation to a minimum.

Certain subjects in high school require high performance hardware and specialist software. How will students in these subjects be catered for?

At ISL Qatar we have dedicated equipment for subjects which sometimes require the use of such tools. All student needs will be met through these resources and through the use of platform independent browser- based applications accessible through any device.

Will there be charging stations so that devices can be recharged during the school day?

One aspect of the BYOD programme is the development of self-management and organisational skills amongst the student population. All students are expected to charge their device overnight. However, there are a number of charging stations around the school placed around electrical outlets.

What structures are in place to ensure that students are not exposed to inappropriate material?

We enforce explicit web filtering and block access to VPN and other filter bypass services. We also enforce SafeSearch on all popular search engines. That said, no web filter is 100% reliable so we encourage students and families to employ the principles of digital citizenship and responsible use of technology.

What are the expectations around using the device at home?

We believe that fostering responsible digital citizenship is a collaborative effort involving students, educators, and families. While the school imposes no restrictions on home device usage by students, we encourage parents and families to actively participate in promoting safe and responsible technology use.

When using their personal devices at home, students must bring their laptop to school 'ready for learning'. This means that all 'home-based' applications and websites should be shut down before coming to school.
