The primary language of instruction at ISL Qatar is English. However, as the school embraces ‘Diversity’ as one of its 4 pillars, we seek to promote multilingualism and multiculturalism as important components of global citizenship.
Our students are given the opportunity to develop their Mother Tongue Language (if available) and /or to choose a Language Acquisition as an additional language.
Mother Tongue Language: Refers to a child’s first or native language, the language learned at home (both in spoken and written form). We currently offer the following mother tongue languages: Arabic, French, Spanish, Dutch, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, and Swedish.
Language Acquisition: is offered to non-native speakers of a language. We currently offer Spanish and French Acquisition across the school whereas Arabic Acquisition is only offered in the Middle and High Schools.
Primary students who have English as their Mother Tongue, or those for whom we are unable to provide classes in their Mother Tongue, will have to choose one language in the scope of the Language Acquisition programme: French OR Spanish.
From Grade 6 onwards, students who do not require EAL can study three languages, English and two others. This may be:
- English, Mother Tongue, and one of the Language acquisitions offered (Arabic, French, or Spanish).
- English, and two of the language acquisition classes offered (Arabic, French, or Spanish).
