A group of children from Grade 3 and 4 have come together for the second year in a row to organize the collection of gifts for the support staff here at ISL Qatar.

Working with their parents, they have organized the collection of donated goods, a bake sale during break time, the purchasing of food items, the construction of cards and finally, the offering of all of these items to the support staff. When children take the initiative to work together and reach out to other people, what learning might they be involved in? Here are some possible things that the children and their parents might have learned:

  • Service - have a responsibility to reach out and offer support.
  • Collaboration the process and product of our work increases in quality when me becomes we.
  • Learning outside of the classroom - meaningful learning is authentic, it involves real people and happens in real time.
  • Logistical planning and problem solving - projects involve multiple steps and frequent obstacles.
  • Empathy - the need to know other people to understand how they think and feel.
  • Action - adults will help children to learn that we each have the power to make a difference.
