Sawako Ito
On 27th January, Sawako Ito from Grade 3 won the 11th QTF Open Tennis Tournament Under 9 category.
Sawako shares her experience in her own words -
"First it was all ready the quarter final. The first match I played against was with a girl called Noora, it was little hard and little easy. I won first set 4-0 and second set 4-2. The next day it was semi finals. I played against a girl called Dana. It was a very tough match because she is good. I lost the first set 3-4 and I won the second set 4-0 so we did a tie-break & then I won 7-5. The next day was the finals. It was also a very tough match I played with a girl called Dorsaf. She is a very good player she hit the ball so strong so I knew it will be a very tough match. The first set I won 4-0 then I was very proud of myself and very surprised. The second set I won 4-3. I was more happy and more surprised and much more proud of my self."
Design Projects
Design Projects in Grade 9 & 10
During the first half of the academic year, students in Mr. Minhas’ G9 Design class were called upon to design and prototype a new superhero mascot design for the "Save the Children Charity" (STC). The projects’ global context focused on "designing for a purpose" and students were asked to consider less fortunate children around the world and to offer them an iconic symbol of hope. Students were challenged to design a new mascot for the charity which it could use as an icon of hope for all suffering children around the world.
Students also explored how their product could be sold in stores and the funds and profits used for less fortunate children. In order to complete this, students learnt about 3D printing and 3D model-making.
They used high level, sophisticated CAD software to prototype and then print their designs, using the new 3D printers the school obtained this year. They then used the lids of different bottle tops to create a base for their superhero mascots. In doing so, they supported one of the three R's of sustainability and eco-friendliness. Their learning achievements and outcomes are soon to be displayed around the school but here is a preview!
Rhea Arora
Rhea Arora who graduated from ISL Qatar in 2018 with 43 points has recently secured a place at Wadham College to read PPE and will begin her studies in October 2019.
For some students their passion is to be found within the world of academia. They are often polymaths who read widely and have an insatiable desire for learning. Finding the right course and institution can be a challenge as they don’t view the world as a set of discrete subjects. PPE (Politics, Philosophy and Economics) is one such course that often attracts these all-rounders. Described as being the broadest social studies programme in the UK, universities look for students who are self-motivated, able to think and write concisely and are inspired to seek out solutions to problems that are new to them. PPE is only offered by the very top UK universities such as Oxford, LSE and Warwick.
